Trash and Treasure Word

A fun game to play when teaching children to blend simple CVC words and differentiate if the word makes any sense or not. It is a great activity for ELL students as they not only learn to blend words but also build up their vocabulary.

Two boxes with clear titles - Trash and Treasure. A bowl with random 3- letter words that can be easily blended.

I used A4 printer paper boxes.

Have fun trashing no sense words.

Reviewing Letter Sounds using Realia Objects

In a Kindergarten environment, addressing the the different learning styles and incorporating them in your teaching is very important. Hands-on activities and tactile games often address the different learning styles and help retain the learning objective intended.  I used realia objects to help revise the beginning letter sounds.

Laminated Letters set out on the table.

A tray containing realia objects.

A child picks up an object, sounds out the beginning sound and places it on the corresponding letter.

Sh for Shell, Ch for Chain

b for boot

 Have fun playing games.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

Celebrating various cultures are important.  Through discussion, visual aids and  art and crafts, children understand the meaning of the various symbols associated in different cultures.

Here is an activity we did for Chinese New Year.

The Majestic Cherry Blossom Tree
Skill based activity. We used a straw to blow diluted paint and make it look like branch. We used finger prints to make the flowers.

Unique pieces of work.

Valentine's Day

There is nothing more special than receiving a special handcrafted note from your child. For Valentine's Day, I did a tearing activity, that allowed the children to strengthen their fine motor skills, while designing a special card for their parents.

No card is alike. All are designed with love and especially handcrafted for their parents.

Sight Word Assessment

Oftentimes in a Kindergarten classroom, the role of a teacher is more of an observer rather than a facilitator. In order for this to happen at a normal pace, the teacher must ensure that the learning centers are functional with very little adult guidance.

The game below is a self assessment sight word game. Up to two players can play this game. The children are given 2 colors of token or any math manipulative. In this case I used 2 colors of bear counters. The child attempts to read the sight word. If the child can read it, then they mark that word by placing a bear on that word. When they are ready, they simply raise hand to signal the teacher, who then tests them randomly on the words they know and help them read other tricky words. The teacher can quickly take a photographic evidence of the child's knowledge or write down the words.

This type of self-assessment is fun, less stressful and engaging. When playing with a partner, it promotes healthy competition and peer to peer teaching.

To extend this activity, ask the child to count how many words they identified. Compare the number with that of their partner. Is it less than, more than or equal to?

Have fun assessing your children.

A math manipulative is placed on the word the child can identify.

Sight Word Game - Sunny Side Eggs

Play is an essential element in Kindergarten. Children need to engage in authentic play while learning and honing their literacy skills.

This game allows students to take turns, use their fine motor skills to flip the egg, transfer the egg word on their plate and have a go at reading the sight word. An extension of this activity would be to practice writing by copying the sight word in their work books. Have fun.

Welcome to Kindergarten

Dear Parents, Teachers and Readers,

Welcome to my site. Kindergarten is an amazing grade for children to explore their creativity, energy, and thirst for learning. Through this site, I plan to share with you the many activities I do in my class. I hope to hear your comments and feedback.

I love this wreath. It was gifted to me by my room parents.
